A few years back, a student told me a story that honestly broke my heart a little.
He’d loved music all his life, but had only started learning bass after retiring, but always struggled with one thing: playing by ear. When I asked why, he shared something he’d carried for 50 years.
When he was 10 and a part of his school choir, the conductor singled him out in front of the whole group.
“Stop singing!” she bellowed. “Your terrible ear is throwing everyone off. Are you tone deaf or something!?!”
He barely remembers what he did “wrong” – just the embarrassment and the shame of it all.
But that ‘tone deaf’ label stuck with him for decades, stopping him from even trying to play bass by ear.
But here’s what blew his mind:
He wasn’t tone deaf.
Not even close.
I had him try a simple 3-part test for tone deafness and he passed with flying colors.
Turns out, he just hadn’t trained his ear yet. The problem wasn’t his hearing; it was that decades-old belief in his head that had .
In today’s brand new YouTube lesson, I want to share with you the same 3-part test that PROVED he wasn’t tone deaf (and bust some myths about what tone deafness actually is). It only takes a few minutes, and it could change everything:

The excellent news is that actual medical tone deafness is incredibly rare – and even more rare for musicians.
If you love music enough to play bass, you’re not tone deaf. You’re just untrained, and that can be fixed.
The real first step? I call it “unblocking” your ear. It’s about learning how to listen at deeper and deeper levels so you can finally hear music clearly and play along by ear (without tabs or tutorials).
If you’re ready for a step-by-step process to unlock your ear, then that’s exactly what we do inside my 28-Day Ear Opening Challenge. You can get the full details here:
But even if you’re not ready to try that yet, at least try the test. You might surprise yourself.
Good luck with the lesson and happy hearing!
Cheers,
