‘Odd’ time signature bass lines aren’t super common, and what happens when most bassists get asked to play some odd time bass lines? Usually something like this:
I get it!
When you’re playing in ‘regular’ time signatures (usually 4/4 or 3/4) things are comfortable, it feels good, and you don’t have to think about anything other than making great music.
But playing in five? Seven!?! Or eleven?!?! What about fifteen?!?!?!
If you’re not used to it, these can be legitimately scary, and for most bassists, playing odd time bass lines is about as comfortable as walking around with sharp rocks in your socks.
Today though, I want to change that for you. I want to help you see that playing in an odd time doesn’t have to be stressful or difficult and that’s why I want to get you started with just 3 super simple odd time signature bass lines.
If you can nail these (and I’m certain you can), you’ll see how much fun it can be and how cool it can sound to play in these odd times.
Plus, you’ll learn how to ‘break down’ odd time signatures into super manageable ‘chunks’ so playing in 5, 7, 11, 13 or anything else can be just as comfortable as playing in 4.
