Bass Tabs – if you’ve spent any amount of time on the web trying to figure out how to play your favorite bass lines, you’ve almost certainly come across them.
They’re the (sometimes confusing) lines splattered with a ton of numbers and frequently, weird symbols. When I first started playing bass, I wasn’t a fan of bass tabs – they were kind of confusing to me. They seemed like they were ‘upside down’.
After I finally got my head around the idea though, I saw just how useful they could be. It was much easier making sense of bass tabs than the standard notation – that’s for sure.
If you’ve ever wondered how to read bass tabs, but you weren’t sure how to get started, then this is the perfect lesson for you. In it, I want to show you everything you need to know to get started reading bass tabs. Check it out here:

Your Bass Playing
If you're an absolute beginner on bass, and you're not sure where to start, you're in luck. In the Become A Bassist Beginners Starter Pack, you'll learn exactly where to start and you'll get the fastest path to get your playing to the next level. In it, you'll learn:
- A fundamental technique mistake (Make this error and your playing days will be numbered. Get it right and you'll play for years - pain-free)
- How to master your fretboard - and do it quickly
- 5 beginner-friendly bass lines that will impress your friends and show you how to groove hard
- The 'Instant Bass Line Formula' that lets your create your own plug-and-play bass lines from just 2 elements
- How to get started improvising so you can learn to create your own beautiful bass solos or blistering bass fills
Once you learn to decipher these tabs, a whole new world of possibilities opens up to you. Instead of needing someone to teach you songs, you can figure them out for yourself.
The one thing to be careful of when using the tabs you find online is that some of them will be just plain wrong. There are tons of good quality resources online, but some tabs you find will just be terrible.
When you come across some like this ‘in the wild’, just take them with a grain of salt. If something doesn’t sound right, then change it so it does sound right. You could also check with any musician friends you have if they think it’s correct or not.
Now if you’re a total beginner and you want to jump-start your playing, make sure you sign up for the BAB Beginners Starter Pack. There are a ton of great lessons in there so you’ll know exactly where to start and what to focus on.
Get started by filling in the form underneath the video. I’d love to see you in there and help you along on your bass playing journey!

Les says
Hi Luke received your email but as yet not the starter pack
Luke McIntosh says
Hey Les – do you mean the confirmation email. Is that the one you received? And you confirmed your email address by clicking on the green button? If not, check your spam and junk folders – sometimes my emails get sent there even though you specifically asked for them. Drag them out of there and into your inbox and try to whitelist the address they came from. That should tell your email provider to trust the things that get sent to you. If you have any hiccups, let me know.
