Bass licks and fills – there are tons of them out there. As in, millions and millions of them. So when I say I found the ‘best’ one, it’s more like the best one I’ve found so far.
It’s actually from a song I heard growing up and as a teenager, but totally dismissed as ‘cheesy’ and dated. But when I had to learn it for a corporate band I was a part of, I was forced to learn it, really listen to it, and I found myself actually liking it.
Like – a lot. WAY more than I expected. Teenaged me was a fool!
Now if I ever have to play it at a gig, it’s something I actually look forward to and a big part of it is the bass line which includes the single slickest fill I can think of.
It’s one thing to learn bass licks in one particular song – and that’s fine – I’ll show you how to play one in this week’s lesson. But it’s a completely different thing to take that same lick, learn it, and then make it your own.
That means playing it in different keys, transplanting it into different songs and different styles. If you can do THAT, then every bass riff, bass lick or bass fill gets added to your arsenal of things you can use to make great music.
It also means having a deeper understanding of what you’re playing, which will make you a more confident and a more complete bass player. And all this from learning a single bass lick.

Learn this fill, then use the lick in any key, any style or any song you want.
Good luck with the lick and keep on rockin’!
