You get a chord chart or lyric sheet put in front of you with a bunch of chord symbols over it, but what the hell are you supposed to play? Especially if you’ve never come across some of the symbols before.
This is basically what happened to me first time I saw a ‘real’ jazz chord chart, and to be honest, it scared the hell out of me! There were triangles, circles, plus and minus signs, then all the numbers. As someone who usually learned by ear, it was overwhelmingly confusing.
When you’re just starting out, the whole world of chords can be pretty intimidating. There’s tons of lingo and markings that might be brand new – it’s like a whole new language.
In the first lesson of this chord symbol series, you’ll learn:
- What to pay attention to when it comes to chords and chord symbols and what you can completely ignore – at least when you’re starting out
- The most important job of any bass player (Honestly, you’re probably already doing this…)
- The golden ‘rule’ of bass playing and the one exception to that rule
