Last lesson, we talked all about how you don’t necessarily need to know all of the individual notes of each major scale. Instead, you took one shape and plugged it in all over your bass.
This is fantastic because it lets you play all 12 major scales without much thought. However, the shape method doesn’t help you understand the major scale at all.
Sure – you’ll be able to play it, but that’s not the same as truly understanding it. Understanding how the major scale is put together is what this lesson is all about.
When you understand the inner workings of the major scale, you:
- Won’t be ‘stuck‘ with just playing the shape
- Can play the major scale over your entire fretboard (not just one octave)
- Will start to play ‘by ear‘
In short, having a deeper understanding of the major scale will give you freedom within the music. Whether you’re making basslines, writing melodies, or playing around with fills, having this deeper understanding is going to help you make better music.

The formula I talk about in the lesson is the same on every instrument – not just bass. See how you can take the formula and use it to create many more ways of playing the major scale?
We just had a look at 3 in the lesson, but there are many different ways to get around the major scale. When you do that, you can start thinking about the sound and how to make music with it.
Playing with the drones is one of the best ways to start internalizing the sound of the major scale. There’s no pressure to play fast and you can hear how each of the notes relates to the drone. Best of all, you can get started right away.
If you’d like the drones for all 12 keys, make sure you download The Ultimate Guide To The Major Scale For Bass. You’ll get all of the drones for all of the keys, plus the step-by-step PDF guide that will have you mastering the major scale.
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!

Hi Luke,
I’ve got your “The Ultimate Guide To The Major Scale For Bass” but I can’t see where I download the drones. Could you maybe include the link in the guide (and send it to me!)?
Thanks,
Michael

Hey Michael – the drones are on the same page you downloaded the guide from. Just keep scrolling past the 2 videos and you’ll see them all laid out for you to either download directly or play them on that page. I’ll send the link to your email again.
