Funk bass lines: If there’s anything more fun than laying down some of these, I’m not sure what it is.
But if someone demands:
“Play me something funky!”
What do you do? Have you got some killer funk bass lines you can launch into at the drop of a hat and fill a dancefloor?
If so, awesome! Go to town on whatever funk grooves you already have under your belt.
If someone wants to throw down a bit of funk, but you don’t have anything to play at the moment, then today I have the perfect video for you.
We’re going through 5 old-school funk bass lines that people know and love; the kind of lines that will get people on their feet and paying attention to your playing.
The best part though, is they’re relatively simple to get started with. Being funk bass lines, they’re probably a little more active than a lot of other genres, but once you learn the main phrase of most of these lines, you’ve nailed 90% of the song and you can start jamming on them with other musicians really quickly.
You’ll be learning bass lines played by:
- Will Lee
- Anthony Jackson
- Verdine White
- Ronald LaPread (The Commodores)
- Lucky Scott (Curtis Mayfield)

Download the tabs, notation and practice tracks to start mastering these funky bass lines today!
As always, the best way to get familiar and comfortable with any of these beginner funk bass lines is to practice them! And to make things as easy as possible for you to do that, I’m giving away the tabs, notation PLUS all the backing tracks from this lesson – including the slower practice tracks.
Just fill out the form above and I’ll send you it all – completely free. You can be mastering these bass lines in less than 60 seconds.
Remember as well, that with funk, it’s all about the rhythm and the groove.
Yes – you should absolutely learn the right notes, but what’s probably more important is how you play the right notes. Listen to the original recordings as much as you can and try to make your playing sound and feel as close to what you hear on there.
Once you can do that and things feel really good, then you can start taking these beginner funk bass lines and start putting your own spin on them and making them your own.
Good luck with the funk and happy playing!
Cheers,

Hello Luke,
Just passing by to thank you for your videos about DB intonation. Kind of aide-memoire to me. Very generous from you.
I’m 70, taking private lessons for 3.5yrs now and love that killing DB. As my teacher says, basic drills are always a winner.
