Have you ever wondered how to jam on bass? You see some musicians get up on stage and create beautiful music from absolutely nothing – and it seems like magic.
Do the musicians that do this know some kind of ‘secret’ that the rest of us haven’t discovered?
No!
Learning how to jam on bass is a skill like any other – and skills can be learned! And just like any other skill, you can be break it down into its parts, so it’s simple to get started. Today, we’re going to do exactly that with the skill of jamming.
You see, there are 3 super common jamming scenarios:
- Getting together with just you and a drummer
- Jamming with a chordal player, like a guitarist or a pianist
- Playing with a full band
For every scenario, there are slightly different approaches that you need to take, but there are also tips that will work in nearly every situation, and you’ll get those in today’s lesson as well.
Of course there are other kinds of situations, but these 3 are the most common. Check out the lesson here:

Luke, what a relief to find you! I’ve had 6-8 months of traditional learning. And feel I’m at the stage where I know a lot more than I can actually do, if that makes sense. Lesson wise I got to the stage where I was given a sheet of music, but just the songs words and the chords for the rthym guitar. I found the pattern, listened over and over again, then did as was instructed and put a baseline to it using JUST the root note. I was pretty impressed…… but recognised it as pretty boring. I took the dive and joined in an open mic night with 2 songs…….. disastrous! But a great experience and valuable as a learning curve. And now I have found you and from what I see and have listened to…….. can’t wait to now progress on the practical side of playing more and more…..and singing with it. But can you include some of Soul and reggae please. ( only cause they are the words I’m more likely to know). Thanks in advance .

I’m a exdrummer who hasn’t got the space for a kit anymore, so at 55 years old I’m starting on the bass, I regret not taking it up earlier, but your well explained and articulate manner is helping me immensely, thanks

I am a beginner bassist. The wealth of information in your videos is incredible. The way you teach every lesson makes me “want” to learn. Learning to play is relaxing and fun, the otherwise frustrating excersizes are now enjoyable. Luke, you have a gift thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. YOU ROCK!
