Bass players can be strange creatures. They can be playing a song, grooving along and everything is all good.
But when it comes time for them to play a melody or take a solo, what do they do? They activate what I call “bass solo mode”.
Double time licks, lots of notes, play as fast as you can, crazy techniques, fancy scales…
And what happens to the average person? Their eyes glaze over and they stop paying attention.
In fact, I do the same thing – and I’m a bass player! Playing super
The things that turns heads for the average person is actually a lot simpler and easier than all that stuff. All you have to do is make your bass ‘sing’.
I’m not talking about you actually singing with your voice (although if you’re improvising, you absolutely should do that) I’m talking about using simple techniques that make your bass have a more ‘vocal’ quality to it.
Think about it – most people naturally hone in on the voice in a song, so if you can make your bass playing more voice-like, then you’re almost guaranteed to grab people’s attention and keep it.
That’s why in today’s lesson, I’m sharing 4 ways that you can make your bass sing. You’ll learn:
- The 4 simple techniques that you already know that make your playing more voice-like
- Why overdoing it can have a ‘Bob Dylan effect’ (You probably don’t want this)
- How to take a simple melody and ‘voice-ify’ it

This is one of those things that is rarely thought of but makes such a big difference to your playing. It’s also not the kind of thing that you find in traditional music schools – I had to figure all this stuff out for myself, listening and copying my favorite musicians.
Once you can convincingly do these things and add them into your playing naturally, you’ll see exactly how much fun you can have
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
