Ever wondered how to play bass without drums? A lot of the time, the drummers are the ones keeping time, and glueing the whole band together, but what happens when there is no drummer.
For some people, this happens a lot!
Perhaps you’re an apartment dweller, so you can’t play with a drummer where you live.
Maybe you simply don’t know any drummers, so you’re forced to play bass without drums.
Some groups just don’t want to play with drums at all. Think about acoustic groups like ukulele ensembles – they can sometimes be against the idea of having a drummer at all.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t make it work. In fact, when you learn how to play bass without drums, you can have a ton of fun, plus – it puts you more in control of the time and the groove.
But it can still be tricky to make the bass line drive as much when the drums are missing. It doesn’t have to be like this though.
In this lesson, you’ll learn a simple way to give your bass lines more rhythmic punch so when you’re playing without a drummer, you won’t even notice they’re not there.
One caveat – for this to work, you need a good, strong sense of time. You don’t want to end songs at completely different tempos than you start them at. The way to develop this skill is through spending lots of time with your metronome.
Once you have the tempo internalized though, you can very easily take your bass lines to the next level.
