Learning the notes on your fretboard is a huge win for you – not matter how experienced you might be as a bass player. When you know the notes on your fretboard, everything gets easier.
You can learn songs in no time at all, you can easily find any note that you want in an instant and you can be sure that you’ll never get lost on your fretboard – ever.
Does that sound useful? Awesome! Let’s get started!
In order to learn your fretboard and develop a deep understanding of it, the first step is to understand the sequence of notes that all music is made from. This doesn’t change whether you’re playing bass, playing piano, playing kazoo or any other instrument.
The sequence of notes fits into something I call the ‘Musical Matrix‘ – and that’s what you’ll learn about in this lesson. It’s easy to understand and you don’t need to be able to read music at all.

Like I say in the video, when you first start learning your fretboard, it can be tempting to try ‘tricks‘ or ‘hacks‘. I don’t recommend this at the start. What should you do instead? You should be very systematic and methodical about learning the inner workings of your fretboard.
Once you understand this, the ‘tricks‘ for learning your bass fretboard are going to be much more useful because you’ll already understand the bigger picture of your fretboard.
Understanding the musical matrix and sequence of notes that music is made of is just the first step towards fretboard mastery. In Part Two of this series, you’ll learn how to apply the matrix to your fretboard and learn it like the back of your hand.

Luke,
Great work, had a few strokes(more than 2 and less than 5), effecting my left side. You have made a difference in me wanting to play again. Sorry for the story, question; the cover pic on the guide, is that a left hand neck with a right hand bass? Driving me crazy, oh wait, I’m already crazy!
