There are hundreds – maybe even thousands of things you can work on to improve your bass playing. It can be a real jungle!
How are you supposed to know what’s going to actually help you improve?
A lot of people boil it down to focusing on two things:
- Learning bass lines/songs
- Learning scales
Now there is merit to learning both – and in fact, when people ask me which one they should focus song, I tell them that in reality, they need both!

Now like I said in the video, learning scales doesn’t mean you somehow ‘lose’ any of your creativity. It will still be there when you know more about music.
In fact, learning some scales can actually help you push past the things that you always find yourself playing.
They can expand your creativity.
If you never learned any scales, chances are, you’d still sound the exact same way you do now in a few years time.
The same goes for learning bass lines. One of the best ways to deeply learn how great bass lines are made is to play great bass lines!
If you never look at real-world bass lines and really pay attention to them, the chances of you creating your own are pretty slim.
You need both scales and bass lines at different stages of your bass-playing journey!
