The major scale is everywhere – there’s no way of avoiding it. That also makes it one of the most useful sounds to know and to be able to play.
Not only is it useful by itself, but from the major scale you can also make chords and the ‘modes‘ of the major scale. Most songs that you hear on the radio only use the notes of a major scale! It makes sense to really know how to play this scale.
Actually learning how to play the major scale doesn’t have to be difficult though. In fact, it’s easier for us bass players because we can learn the ‘shape‘ of the major scale and then just plug that shape in everywhere on the bass.
Rather than having to learn every single note of every single major scale, you can learn just one shape and be done.
Sound too good to be true? I promise you it’s not. In fact, it’s probably the easiest and quickest way you can start playing the major scale on your bass.

Like I say in the video, this method is great because you can instantly play any major scale in any key – you just need to know the first note. However, this method also has disadvantages. Mainly, you’re just ‘plugging in‘ the shape without really understanding how it works.
While you can keep doing things this way, I recommend you aim for a deeper level of understanding. The kind of understanding where you can play this scale in multiple ways and really know your way around it.
That’s why I’ve put together The Ultimate Guide To The Major Scale For Bass. Inside it, you’ll learn the inner workings of the major scale and how it’s put together.
