There’s a certain sound you can play on bass that rarely gets used, but I think it’s among the prettiest sounds you can ever play on a bass.
The only problem?
It breaks one of the most important ‘rules’ of bass playing (as much as music has ‘rules’ at least)
However…
You CAN find examples of this sound being used by bassists like Marcus Miller, or in mainstream radio songs by Coldplay.
And the best part is that you only need 2 shapes to get started with it, and they’re super simple.

Want To Get BEYOND Just Roots And 5ths?
This underrated sound it GREAT for coming up with fresh ideas, but if you want to break out of your ‘bass line rut’ and start falling in love with playing your bass again, check out my Critical Mass Bass Line Challenge.
The ideas from the ‘underrated’ sound are VERY similiar to the ‘high-low’ bass line model from day 5 of the challenge.
This bass line challenge was designed specifically for bassists who want to create catchy, original lines that go way beyond basic roots and fifths (and the occasional third) and you can check out all the details here:
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
